My Senior Honors Thesis focuses on the Eleonas scavenger's market in Athens, Greece. The district has housed a migrant camp for the last several years during the refugee crisis, and many have found work salvaging and reselling materials, particularly at a weekly flea market. The city has in the past worked to move the market, but there has recently been some interest in supporting the market as a way to promote the circular economy in Athens. My work will detail other examples of circular scavenging markets and apply them to the conditions in Athens, making recommendations for future research projects and policy exploration.
I am conducting this research with the support of Full Circle Collaborative, who are conducting an ongoing collaboration with the scavenger's market in Eleonas. My thesis should be complete by May 2021.
